Stylt won first prize at The European Hotel Design Awards 2008, for this year’s best hotel interior design.
Stylt was awarded the prize for its conference facility Villa J C Stevens in Stenungsbaden.
“A unique facility has received a unique award,” says Petter A Stordalen, owner of the Choice Hotels chain.
“We have already received top marks from our conference customers and receiving the hotel industry’s equivalent
of the Oscar is for me an acknowledgement for everyone who has been involved in the transformation of Villa J C Stevens.”
Stylt won first prize in the conference and meeting facility category of The European Hotel Design Awards 2008.
The competition was tough and consisted of the international industry’s elite. Super designer Karim Rashid was nominated
as well as Herzog and De Meuron, who designed the Bird’s Nest in Beijing.
“Fantastic and an honour,” says Erik Nissen Johansen. “We will now get international attention,
which will strengthen Stylt’s brand. Another major step forward for Stylt.”
Stylt has transformed the old J C Stevens villa into an exclusive and elegant meeting place
for the most demanding conference guests, with inspiration and themes from the classical world of sailing.
Framed drawings on the walls, beautiful model yachts and rooms named after winning yachts, give this
luxury conference villa a retrospective view of the mid-19th century, when Commander
J C Stevens won the first America’s Cup. Creative Director of the project, Erik Nissen Johansen, is clear about why they won.
“J C Stevens won because the project had the strongest identity and the clearest concept.” The
jury’s citation was: ”Essentially the judges looked for a place they themselves would love to stay
and have creative workshops – one that would blur the boundaries between the preconceived notions of
work and play and provide a stimulating yet relaxed series of spaces within which to communicate.”
The prize was awarded by Anthony Bourdain, the world-renowned chef and writer of works such as Kitchen Confidential.
The prize for Stylt means the beginning of an increasingly international alignment and a strengthening of
the brand in both Europe and the rest of the world. Naturally this needed to be celebrated by everyone involved.
The working group for the project included Erik Nissen Johansen, CD, Andreas Hagersjö, AD,
Jonas Holmsgård and Lisa Stoopendahl copywriters/storytellers, Mia Morén, project manager,
Pia-Cally Wendt, interior design manager and Madeleine Johansson, interior designer/designer.
The competition was organised by Sleeper Magazine, the leading magazine in hotel design, development and architecture.
The European Hotel Design Awards 2008 culminated in the pomp of the award ceremony in London on 6 November.
